Central European Institute for Cosmology and Fundamental Physics

CEICO Postdoctoral positions in Field theory, Cosmology and Astrophysics

The Central European Institute for Cosmology and Fundamental Physics (CEICO) at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for postdoctoral positions on the interplay between field theory, cosmology and astrophysics.

The duration of the posts is for 2+1 years (initial contract is for 2 years, renewable for a further year subject to performance). The starting date is flexible, with the latest being 1st October 2021. The gross salary is 60,000 CZK/ month (~ 2300 ), from which insurance/pension contributions are deducted, and is subject to a yearly raise contingent upon performance. A generous travel budget of 100,000 CZK/year (~ 4000 ), along with funds for personal equipment are offered.

The successful applicants will join an interdisciplinary research project led by Dr. Ippocratis Saltas, and are expected to pursue research on the theory of gravity (broadly defined), and/or investigate the relevant phenomenological implications for cosmology and astrophysics. Positions are supported by funds from the Czech Science Foundation (GAR) and the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Physics/Astronomy, or a related field, by the start of the post. We welcome applications from candidates with an expertise in any of the following research areas:

  • Quantum field theoretical methods for gravity, scalar fields or other matter systems (e.g perturbative or non-perturbative methods, Wilsonian renormalisation group techniques, effective field theories)
  • Probes of gravity in astrophysics and cosmology (e.g theory and simulations of gravitational waves, physics of relativistic stars, data analysis and statistical methods, early- or late-time Universe).

Applicants with either a theoretical or numerical background are equally encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have access to CEICO's computing cluster of 1000 cores.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr. Ippocratis Saltas, <saltas@fzu.cz>.

Application procedure

Applicants should fill the online form and upload as a single pdf file the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A brief description of past and current research interests/achievements, and their vision as to how they would fit within the advertised post (maximum 2 pages, no less than 11 pt fonts)
  • List of publications

The contact details of 3 academic referees must be supplied online. Referees will be contacted automatically by the online system, and it is the applicant’s responsibility to inform them of their application and the deadline below. Applications received by email will not be accepted. By applying to this position, applicants agree to the Institute of Physics GDPR policy.

  • The deadline for all application material (including reference letters) is 19 February 2021
